press linux.jpgSTAR: ONLY MANUFACTURER TO OFFER LINUX & APPLEMAC SUPPORT FOR POS PRINTERS

June 2004

Further demonstrating its technological leadership, Star Micronics is demonstrating its POS printer support for both Linux CUPS and Apple Mac, in addition to the more readily available Java POS printer driver technology at this year’s Retail Solutions exhibition ( 8th – 10th June, NEC, Birmingham).

Correctly forecasting the escalating market adoption of Linux, Star Micronics invested in support for the operating system over two years ago. Within three to five years, Linux is predicted to permeate all markets, with installations increasing by 26% in comparison to Unix, which is expected to shrink by 4% or Windows, which is scheduled to grow at a slower rate, by 9% (source: IBM). Support for Linux CUPS is typically required in legacy systems where POS printers are being used in addition to standard PC printers. The only POS printer manufacturer to offer Linux CUPS support on its POS printer range, Star Micronics is set to fully exploit the projected market pervasion of the operating system.

The popularity of Linux is increasing as users recognise its inherent benefits of low cost – lack of licensing costs mean considerable savings, especially in environments of numerous POS terminals; proven technological stability and its open source status, enabling OEMs to look at the code, use those features required, whilst easily adding others to suit specific customer requirements. The lack of hidden functions within Linux also means that it is extremely secure and therefore ideal for Internet applications.

Adhering to its policies for developing customer-driven features and for offering choice across its range of products, Star Micronics also provides drivers to support Apple Mac implementation.
